“Pathways to College changed our school.  (It) impacted the entire school body because it created an atmosphere of scholastic pride…The program’s dominant presence in our school was unusual because academic extracurricular programs often don’t have such eager participation.”  John O. Jacobs, Principal (Ret.)

Goals

  • Create a long term strategy to expand college access for high potential students of color in underserved communities.
  • Utilize the leadership potential of participants in each school program to create a culture in which it’s “cool to be smart;” thereby stimulating school-wide improvement and reform.

Impact

  • With involvement in Pathways, students’ aspirations rise and they begin to apply to some of the most selective colleges in the United States.
  • The example of discipline and dedication the students provide, and the richness of their experiences and successes, have a significant effect on all teachers and students in a given school.
  • Pathways teachers additionally affect other teachers with whom they work formally and informally, as they share ideas and methods.
  • Evaluations indicate that graduation rates, college applications and student aspirations improve throughout the schools where Pathways is present.
