“I am inspired by my love and belief in my Scholars. I desperately want the best for them. I am perpetually inspired by the design and mission of Pathways to College as an organization - because I believe Pathways to College holds the answers that so many brilliant, ignored students are yearning for.” R. Manwell, Teacher

Scholars Program - Curriculum and Approach to Learning

Pathways works with students in selected communities (program sites) throughout their high school years. Students are selected by application and teacher recommendation. Their potential is identified by evaluating several carefully developed criteria. Standardized test scores may be collected but do not serve as the primary criterion for selection. The program is not remedial.

From a pool initially identified by students, Pathways hires six of the most effective teachers in each participating school. For four hours a week, after school, these teachers provide coaching support, targeting the life skills and intellectual habits needed to prepare for and succeed in college.

The curriculum focuses on the reality that the students must learn a new language and culture - not “better” than the one they know, but one needed to optimize their potential for success in college and in their desired careers.

Students develop the tools needed to reflect and build on their life experiences, and to strengthen their critical thinking and writing skills - both, research indicates, a key to academic success.

Students participate in a range of out-of-school meetings, events and trips; 11th graders go on a college tour of several days’ duration.

Pathways students attend an orientation meeting with their parents and/or guardians; a series of informational sessions is also provided during the school year to parents and guardians.
